AR Motorcycle Helmet

man walking in front of textured wall

CONTEXT

AR interface projects information on the transparent glass on helmet's visor.

CHALLENGES & GOALS

  • A new area for me (hadn't had experience working with AR or VR interfaces)
  • Limited time(one working day)
  • The client had technical limitations (only green color can be used, the size and position of the screen on the helmet can't be changed)
  • The concept presentation should look attractiveto investors

CLIENT

European startup

TEAM

Designer (me)

MY ROLE

Create a concept, conduct user-tests, UX and UI design

My task was to create in one working day a realistic concept of a motorcycle helmet with augmented reality for a startup company in Europe, which they can include to presentation for investors

RESEARCH AND DEFINING THE PROBLEM

I studied competitors (other startups) promo sites and watched their presentation videos on youtube.

The main difficulties in the development of the concept are the limited space that can be used with AR technology, the use of only one green colour and the inability to conduct full testing.

The main purpose of this helmet is to reduce the number of accidents,to make motorcycle riding safer

IDEATION

First, I need to specify what information we would display. Interface can't be distracting, it should be clear and understandable, because the motorcyclist must quickly operate at high speed.

So, I created the list with main and secondary features:

Main

Speed + Speed limit

Navigation

Danger warnings

Secondary

Smart notifications

Controlled by a voice:

  • Incoming call
  • Music control
  • Bad weather incoming

Second, I created 5 concepts with different presentation of navigation and speed.

I found suitable respondents and potential users of the product for testing and conducted interviews with them. I was able to improve my solutions based on their answers.

MAIN FINDINGS

Innovating new ideas requires research, try to find respondents even when time is very limited. Instead of allowing existing practices to be a constraint, it allows us to understand what has already been done so we can understand the possibilities of where we can go next.

Final outcome
